Alkaline foods are foods that increase oxygen levels in your blood and help neutralize acidity. Examples of alkaline foods include raw green leafy vegetables, wheatgrass, and non-sweet fruits.
Alkaline foods contain a 7.1 to 14 pH range, 7.1 being the least alkaline and 14 being the most. Acid foods have a pH of less than 7, while neutral foods have a pH of 7. The amount of oxygen absorbed in your bloodstream goes hand in hand with the body’s PH levels. The higher the pH, the better your absorption of oxygen is.
The Right Acid-Alkaline Balance
Our blood has a pH of about 7.365, which is slightly alkaline. At the start of the 20th century, scientists discovered that our blood needs to absorb enough oxygen to prevent sickness. Sufficient oxygen in the blood helps prevent medical conditions such as cancer, arthritis, diabetes, candida infections, and heart-related issues.
Our body strives to not only maintain the temperature at 37 degrees Celsius, but also keep our pH at 7.365. Maintaining pH at this level enables sufficient oxygen absorption into the bloodstream and hence allows proper metabolic functioning.
When pH goes too high or dips too low, our bodies will not function properly. We may feel sick, lethargic, and suffer body aches. It might also cause poor digestion and elevate the risk of gaining weight. It’s vital that our body maintains a slightly alkaline pH.

Unfortunately, our favorite foods are often high in acid content. They alter the pH levels in our bodies, making us acidic and sick. Below is a list of acid foods:
- Meat and animal foods (eggs, fish, chicken, etc.)
- Milk and dairy products (yogurt, cheese, butter)
- Processed foods and drinks (soft drinks, wine, burgers, potato chips)
- Unhealthy fats
- Some raw fruits (citrus fruits, tomatoes, plums, berries, peaches)
- Grains and grain products (rice, wheat, bread, pasta)
- Cashew nuts and peanuts

As we mentioned above, most foods in our diets are highly acidic. Eating them on a daily basis increases the risk of acidity, acid reflux, and other medical conditions. To neutralize the acid levels, we need to add alkaline foods into our diet.
The goal should not be to eliminate all acid foods. Some like fruits, grains, and milk are highly nutritious. The aim is to balance the diet with both acid and alkaline foods. Eating alkaline foods will allow your body to prevent most diseases. You can also reduce acidity levels by hydrating your body with water.

How Acid Are You?
How can you determine your body’s pH level? You can test it with a simple urine test. Go to a health store and buy pH test strips, also known as litmus paper. Pee on the test strip and wait for a couple of seconds. The litmus paper will change in color depending on your pH levels. Compare the color change with the ones on the pH chart to see where you line up. Once you finish, discard the strip.
You can also test your body’s pH with saliva instead of urine. If you are using saliva, ensure there aren’t any traces of food and drinks in your mouth. A good tip would be to test in the morning before consuming anything or brushing your teeth. If you’ve already eaten or brushed your teeth, wait for two hours, then rinse your mouth with your saliva, not water. You can test the pH by licking the litmus paper for a few seconds or transferring your saliva onto a spoon. For the best accuracy, it’s best to conduct the pH test in the morning, right after you wake up.
